In May 2006 the Rakali Watch Team participated in a ‘trap-and-release survey’ organized by the BaysideCity Council.
The aim was to determine Rakali distribution and population along the Port Phillip Bay foreshore managed by BaysideCity Council, from Brighton in the north to Beaumaris in the south.
For the first time after three surveys over an eight year period, the system of waterways and wetlands through ElsternwickPark and Golf Course were included in the survey to confirm anecdotal sightings of Rakali.
All captured Rakali were weighed, measured, microchipped and released safely back into their environment.
The survey was an undoubted success with a total of 39 animals captured, some of which were juveniles indicating good breeding success.
